Today is the 16th anniversary of the Gears of War franchise. Netflix has delivered a present for fans of the franchise.

“To mark the occasion,” Netflix announced, “[we have] partnered with The Coalition to adapt the Gears of War video game saga into a live action feature film, followed by an adult animated series, with the potential for more stories to follow!”

Originally developed by Epic Games, Gears of War launched for the Xbox 360 on November 7th, 2006. Taking place on the fictional planet of Sera, Gears of War tells the story of the battle between humanity and Locusts.

Developer The Coalition is handling the series now. The most recent release was Gears 5 in 2019 for the Xbox One.

The gameplay is a cover-based third-person shooter starring Marcus Fenix, voiced in-game by John DiMaggio.

Fans are already speculating that Dave Bautista is a natural shoo-in to play a live-action version of Marcus Fenix. Bautista spoke last year about his desire to play Fenix in a Gears of War adaptation.

“I don’t make any pretense about it,” he told Collider recently. “I had a chance to get a meeting at WB, they were talking to me about this and that and I said ‘hey, let’s talk about Bane.’ That happened to me one other time in my career. They wanted to talk to me about Fast and the Furious, and I said ‘I’m not interested, let’s talk about Marcus Fenix’.”

Cliff Bleszinski, who helped create the franchise, also spoke on today’s news.

In addition to congratulating the franchise, Netflix, and The Coalition on the upcoming adaptations, he mentions that he is not involved in the series.
