Overwatch 2 has been off to a rocky yet successful start.
After the second version of Blizzard‘s popular shooter was released, it tripled the maximum concurrent player count of the original one. It reached a whopping 25 million players in its first ten days. With many new players jumping into the arena, many of them wonder what the best heroes are. If you’re one of the players searching for the strongest heroes to play, we’re here to help you with our tank tier list for Overwatch 2.
We categorized all the tanks in the game based on their strength in the current meta.

Overwatch 2 Tank Heroes Tier List
- S-Tier: Winston, D.Va
- A-Tier: Zarya, Sigma, Junker Queen
- B-Tier: Orisa, Reinhardt
- C-Tier: Roadhog, Wrecking Ball
- D-Tier: Doomfist
Let’s see the reasons why we classified Overwatch 2 tank heroes as such in our tier list.
S-tier for Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List
Winston
Winston is a more versatile tank in Overwatch 2, thanks to a minor change in his ability set.
His shield was certainly one of the best ones in Overwatch 1. It still is. Winston’s powerful diving potential and close-range efficiency, and shield proved deadly, especially against targets with lower HP.
However, he wasn’t a great fit when it came to mid-range. Now that our scientist gorilla can release focused electricity with his Tesla Cannon, we can cross that weakness off.
You might arguably find better options than Winston in certain comps and maps. Nevertheless, it is safe to say he’s one of the greatest choices.
D.Va
D.Va is the other tank worthy of having a place in the top tier of our Overwatch 2 tank tier list.
Blizzard hasn’t implemented huge changes on D.Va with Overwatch 2. Some buffs to her health and accuracy, that’s it.
However, as the game transitioned into a 5v5 combat format, D.Va’s damage-focused ability set proved more efficient in the new version of Overwatch. You can easily chase down and hunt key targets such as Mercy and Sombra thanks to D.Va’s mobility and Micro Missiles.
Although D.Va is undefeated in catching heroes and eliminating them in close combat, she can be a more vulnerable tank because of her nerfed Defense Matrix. So, it would be best if you were more careful against incoming damage while aggressively focusing on the key targets. That’s how D.Va works now.
A-Tier for Overwatch Tanks
Zarya
Kickstarting the A-Tier is our Russian tank Zarya. Let alone tanks; she is one of the strongest heroes of all three classes.
Zarya’s shields were accumulated into one pool with the launch of Overwatch 2. Therefore, she can shield herself virtually all the time, making her a constantly fully-charged, immortal death machine. Moreover, she does not need to utilize her Projected Barrier as much as before. That’s because Overwatch 2 teams only have one tank instead of two. That’s the perfect opportunity for Zarya to tank all the damage using her shield pool for herself!
Stronger than ever she might be, Zarya lacks the mobility required in Overwatch 2. That’s a big disadvantage, given the current state of the game. That’s why she couldn’t make it to S-tier.
We’ll see how Blizzard will tweak Zarya to keep the game balanced.
Sigma
Thanks to his effective and versatile off-tank play style, Sigma has consistently been a strong tank since his release.
However, with the game transitioning into a 5v5 format, Sigma hasn’t been able to keep up nicely. As mobility is a crucial element of the current meta, our eccentric astrophysicist has difficulties keeping at the highest level in the status quo. With the main problem being highly mobile DPS heroes like Sombra, Tracer, and Genji, it’s difficult for Sigma to counter them with his stationary Experimental Barrier.
That doesn’t mean Sigma is not a good choice anymore, as he still has his place in our A-tier.
Junker Queen
Our new tank Junker Queen has been a fan-favorite thanks to her versatile ability set.
The queen of the wasteland shows her strength, especially in close-range combat situations. While she can put herself on the frontline to tank damage and wound enemies, she can also help her teammates by healing and buffing them.
And her ultimate? Don’t get us started. While bursting through enemies with damage over time, Junker Queen can render her enemies’ healers useless. A perfect way to snag a team kill in critical situations.
B-Tier for Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List
Orisa
Orisa had a huge rework going into Overwatch 2. Thanks to her new ability set, which is more offensive and active, she is a more viable choice in Overwatch 2.
Orisa was basically a turret behind a wall with her stationary shield, which made her lack on the mobility front.
Now that Orisa’s ability set is more focused on proactive plays, she can go into more intense close-range combats with enemies. Her damage reduction and projectile destruction abilities take a lot of resources to kill Orisa. Combining that with her stunning Energy Javelin, The Hero of Numbani can be a deadly choice against critical targets.
With such an ability set compatible with the current meta, some can even argue that Orisa should be in the A-tier. For now, let’s call it a close shot and carry on with our Overwatch 2 tank tier list.
Reinhardt
Although Reinhardt is a good option for beginners, thanks to his ease of play, the German tank relies on external factors to be as effective as before.
Reinhardt took a big hit as his Barrier Shield’s health was reduced from 1600 to 1200. Furthermore, its regeneration rate was nerfed, too. Some changes in his Charge ability make it more agile, but that doesn’t make up for the nerfs in the Barrier Shield.
If you have a team composition built around Reinhardt or specialize in him, go ahead. Otherwise, Reinhardt is average at best in the current meta.
C-Tier for Overwatch Tanks
Roadhog
Even though he’s in a worse place than before, Roadhog didn’t drastically change with the launch of Overwatch 2. Blizzard tweaked his ultimate a little and buffed his healing. In fact, his changes made Roadhog an individually better tank.
However, the ability set of the Australian tank isn’t as effective in Overwatch 2. Players opt for more all-around and mobile heroes now that teams only have one tank instead of two. Roadhog, as you might guess, is neither mobile nor all-around. That’s why he isn’t an objectively good choice in the current meta.
Roadhog can still be a strong hero in certain situations, despite all. He’s not a great fit for team play. So, you can consider going with him if you’re playing solo or your team lacks on the damage front.
Wrecking Ball
Wrecking Ball is in a similar situation to Roadhog. The cute hamster is actually stronger than before, but the change from 6v6 to 5v5 hurt him deeply.
He isn’t effective against key vulnerable targets as the other tanks. Nevertheless, he received substantial buffs in Overwatch 2. He has more armor, more shield, and more knockback with his Roll. Thanks to those changes, Wrecking Ball is much better for tanking damage and distracting enemies.
In a nutshell, you can give Wrecking Ball a shot if you specialize in him. When we look at things from a wider perspective, he isn’t a viable choice in competitive gameplay.
D-Tier for Overwatch 2 Tank Tier List
Doomfist
One thing Overwatch 2 players can unequivocally agree on is Doomfist’s terrible situation, and it’s no wonder why.
Doomfist is now a tank, with drastic changes in his ability set. His health was increased from 250 to 450, but Doomfist no longer has his Rising Uppercut. Instead, he can use his Power Block to mitigate frontal damage, which he then uses to empower his Rocket Punch.
His new ability set is more about zoning targets than upright eliminating them. The character design seems good at first glance, given Doomfist’s role change. However, he definitely isn’t the tank in the new 5v5 format.
We’ll see how Blizzard will try to turn him into a relevant hero again.
