Super Mario RPG players can get their hands on the Lazy Shell items during their time in Mario’s world as they battle many enemies progressively. All five party members (Mario, Peach, Bowser, Mallow, and Geno) can equip pieces of armor and activate items to help them in combat. One such item that comes to mind is the Lazy Shell, which players can collect during their time in the game.

The Lazy Shell comes in two versions: one that serves as Mario’s arguably best weapon and another that protects any member of Mario’s party. This means there are two Lazy Shells in Super Mario RPG that conveniently come packaged together. So one question remains: Where are these Lazy Shells in the game?

Where to Find the Lazy Shells

The Lazy Shells in Super Mario RPG are in the sky, explicitly floating over a cloud. The cloud is accessible by climbing a magical beanstalk grown by the Gardener Toad in Rose Town. Players must assist the Gardener by gathering a fast-growing seed and a fertilizer to throw into the Gardener’s planter; the Gardener has been searching for these items for as long as he can remember.

The seed and fertilizer are found separately. Players can acquire the seed after defeating Megasmilax in Bean Valley. The item will be nearby on a note. For the fertilizer, players need to take down Valentina in Nimbus Land. While at Nimbus Land, players can speak with a Beezo floating off-map to the east of town. It’s an invisible path, so finding proper footing might take a moment.

With both items in hand, speak with the Gardener in Rose Town. He will then toss the seed and fertilizer into a giant pot, where a magical beanstalk spontaneously grows into the sky. As one might assume, climb the beanstalk via the chimney (connected to the Gardener’s residence) to reach the clouds. At the top, players will enter a cloud platform with two chests, one for each distinctive Lazy Shell, though they look identical.

Expert Tip

In the Super Mario RPG remake, the seed and fertilizer items are rebranded as key items; therefore, they can’t be sold or discarded. Players should keep this in mind if they decide to revisit the SNES original from 1996, because in the older version, they’re presented as ordinary items that can easily be ignored.

How to Use the Lazy Shells

As mentioned, the Lazy Shells work differently for different characters in Super Mario RPG. The weaponized Lazy Shell works only for Mario, and is widely considered his best weapon in the game. It provides a high attack power for Mario, which is incredibly advantageous against more formidable foes.

The armor piece works instead for anyone in Mario’s party. It boosts physical and magical defense stats. It also prevents users from succumbing to adverse status effects and elemental attacks. Be that as it may, it comes with a couple of downsides. Namely, the armored Lazy Shell reduces the user’s physical and magical defenses with an additional decrease in speed.

If players ever need to be rid of their Lazy Shells, they can always sell them for some coins instead. Players can sell the weaponized shell for 90 coins, and the armored variant can be traded for 111 coins.
