What film do you consider a masterpiece? I’ll go first. What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams is a beautifully stunning masterpiece that will leave you in a puddle of tears on the floor. After asking the internet for other examples, here are their top-voted movies.

1. There Will Be Blood (2007)

There Will Be Blood is a drama set in the early 20th century and is touted widely as a masterpiece starring Daniel Day-Lewis, who finds oil during Southern California’s oil boom. He becomes a self-made tycoon, but as his fortune grows, he deviates into moral bankruptcy.

2. Her (2013)

Many people suggested that Joaquin Phoenix has proven to be an actor of depth and layers. Theodore (Joaquin’s character) finds fascination in a new operating system that is sensitive and playful after suffering a broken heart and divorce. 

He soon falls in love with “Samantha,” the program. Critics say Her is a romance with realistic snags that feels entirely possible. However, the underlying commentary is what makes this movie extremely interesting.

3. Spirited Away (2001)

Spirited Away won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. It’s a Japanese animated fantasy film made by Studio Ghibli Inc. They are known for producing high-quality animations that garner critical appraisal every time.

This movie shows a 10-year-old girl who discovers an amusement park after moving to the Japanese countryside with her parents, where they are transformed into pigs. She must find a way to get free and reunite with her parents in this supernatural realm.

4. The Thing (1982)

According to several people in the thread, The Thing is a masterpiece if you enjoy horror and sci-fi. It follows a group of American scientists conducting research in Antarctica who take in a sled dog.

The dog brutally attacks them, which later turns out to be an alien who can shapeshift and take the form of its victims. Chaos and dread ensue as the being starts picking them off one by one.

5. Arrival (2016)

According to many, Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, is another masterpiece. This movie shows that not all aliens are thin, green, and big-eyed creatures.

Twelve spaceships land in different locations all over the globe, and Louise Banks (Adams) leads an investigation team to find out why. They interact with the creatures and unravel a mystery that possibly means the end of humankind.

6. La Haine (1995)

La Haine is French for hatred. It is a French crime drama released in the United States as Hate. It shows a young Arab being arrested and beaten unconscious by police in Paris. Riots erupt, and when his friends find a police officer’s gun, the night takes a tragic turn.

7. Barry Lyndon (1975)

Based on the novel, The Luck of Barry Lyndon by William Makepeace Thackeray. It shows how an Irish lad without prospects gets into a relationship with a wealthy widow and cheats his way up to become British royalty. 

He does this by assuming the identity of her dead husband. Viewers say you can pause Barry Lyndon at any point, and the shot would be a painting.

8. The Seventh Seal (1957)

A Swedish knight returns home from the Crusades to find his country battling the Black Death. He believes that God does not exist, but this torments him and challenges Death to a chess match for his life. He wants to flee from Death long enough to do one act of redemption. Several users highly recommended this film.

9. Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

This recent Wes Anderson animation shows that you don’t need nudity or vulgarity to make a movie a masterpiece.

With the voices of George Clooney (Mr. Fox) and Meryl Streep (Mrs. Fox), this kid/family-friendly light comedy shows a fox who endangers the lives of his family and friends when he raids the farms of their human neighbors. He must resort to his inherent craftiness to solve the problem.

10. North By Northwest (1959)

Alfred Hitchcock made some great movies in his time. Many noted North By Northwest is another masterpiece from the 1950s that has virtually zero flaws.

This mystery/thriller has a ruthless spy pursue a New York City ad executive because he is mistakenly thought to be a government agent. When the spy and his accomplices catch up to him, it results in several iconic action sequences.
