DC Universe Online first dropped over ten years ago on PC and Playstation 3. And despite the age of the game, it is still widely played and updates regularly. As of September 2020, the title boasted 419,000 monthly users and 40,000 subscribers.
The creator of the popular game was Dimensional Ink Studios. And according to reports, Dimensional is now working on MMORPG for DC competitor, Marvel Comics.
The news was uncovered by eagle-eyed Twitter user Miller, who wrote, “EG7 (DCUO/Everquest devs’ parent company) released their Q3 ’21 financials, and confirmed the unannounced AAA Marvel MMO that appeared in the GeForce Now leak and which had previously been cancelled in 2018 as the studio faced financial hardships has officially been REVIVED!!”
Miller continued, “The new AAA Marvel MMO is being developed by Dimensional Ink Studios and spearheaded by CEO Jack Emmert, whose lengthy resume includes DCUO, City of Heroes/Villains, and Marvel Universe Online (which was also cancelled before release though ultimately succeeded by Marvel Heroes.)”
It is certainly smart for any company to be in business with Marvel. The comics giant currently has some of the hottest games on the market. The Spider-Man game series produced for Playstation has been a massive hit with two new games (Miles Morales and Spider-Man 2) introduced in the last year. Guardians of the Galaxy was a hit for Square Enix and the Avengers game will soon get an update that features Spider-Man. With plenty of shows on Disney+ and more movies on the way, interest should continue to grow.
